Chapter Six

Andrea’s “intern”, smarter than his companion, had let himself be goose-walked to the hardware department before vaulting himself through a nearby window and pulling a runner. Amy cursed under her breath at the news. She had known he was the smarter one – he had clearly known that they didn’t use interns here – and had only gone along with the lie once his partner had gotten him trapped into it. They needed someone to watch the grounds.

“Nate, how’s the tech work going?” she asked.

“Alright,” he replied. “Their team here is reasonably good. I’m backtracking the attacks. They’ve set up quite a maze, but I think I can follow it all the way back to their base, or at least wherever they’re using right now.”

“Can you spare Taylor? We need someone on grounds. We’ve had a runner.”

She heard an uncomfortable smack as Nate sucked on his teeth. “If you can promise I get Taylor back soon, sure, I guess. We have to keep the pressure on, though. At some point they’re going to get through, and I don’t know if they’ll be able to tell we’re replacing with fake intel or not. They might increase their attack.”

“Taylor,” Amy said. “We need you to loop the grounds. See if they’re going in somewhere else or just making a run for it.”

“Roger that,” Taylor said.

Amy offered a brief explanation to Bert and hauled shorty off, leaving the “intern” tied up in the back of the van. The only win in this moment was that he had manifestos stuffed inside his jacket, loudly and proudly declaring him as a member of White Rabbit. These sorts of groups always wanted to leave their calling cards – they wanted you to know they were there – but it tended to backfire if you caught them ahead of time.

“I’ll just put these away for you now,” Amy said, making sure to record the video of them in his jacket, then storing them safely in a lockbox. “Can’t have you destroying evidence.”

She turned and headed back into the building.

“Reports?” she asked into the comms.

“Short hair is still heading towards the vault area. Taking a roundabout route. Definitely knows the building layouts – I think she’s been here before. Knows a few names, said hi to some people.”

“Did they say hi back?”

“A little confused, but yes,” Elliot replied. That was good. If they were being polite and confused, it meant they weren’t in cahoots.

“Andrea?”

“I’ve circled around to keep an eye on the other one,” she said. Amy could hear the embarrassment in her voice.

“Just stay focused and track them; we don’t want to pick them up too quickly. We outnumber them for now. Let them do a little bit of crime, get it on tape, and then go after them. We can’t hand them over to the police on suspected bad intent.”

Something wasn’t right. Amy could feel it. The blonde, short one had clearly been a newer member, or not as well trained as the rest. She should have known tall was going to be a problem right away, had Andrea take him out in the hall.
